| OUR STORY Our story begins in 1990 when Diane Mayo, a life long resident of Sonoma Valley, told her husband Henry she wanted to grown grapes. Henry loved the suggestion, cleared 10 acres on their Sonoma Valley property and planted 3,000 Chardonnay vines. By 1993 they produced their first wine. However, Henry needed someone he could trust to build the Mayo Family Winery. He turned to his son Jeffrey, a Vice President of one of the largest home building companies in America. Jeffrey jumped at the chance. SINGLE VINEYARD WINES From the moment Jeff arrived to run the family business he knew that what compels a person to enjoy a wine is not merely its fine aromas and flavors, but also it's story. And he knew too that the real story behind any wine is the place it is grown. So, the family decided Mayo Family wines would showcase great vineyards and the theme of "Single Vineyards" came to define Mayo Family. Each wine made at Mayo is made in very small batches from single vineyard sources. As Jeff explains it, "We remember wines when they speak to us, when they tell a story about a person or place, when they define something real and this is exactly what wines from single vineyards do…so that's what we make here at Mayo family, wines that tell stories." DIRECT TO THE WINE LOVER With the completion of the Mayo Family's new winery and tasting room on Highway 12 in Sonoma Valley, a new era began for the family: The era of serving the real customer. Once they opened their winery and tasting room, everything changed. The fun and excitement of actually meeting the customer and the more straightforward transactions led the Mayo's to shut down their distribution network and sell directly to the wine lover. Today, in addition to the comfortable tasting room at the winery in Glen Ellen, the family also operates the "Reserve Room" just up-valley in the village of Kenwood. Here the Mayo's started the first ever wine and food pairing tasting room. Visitors sit rather than stand. They enjoy a seven course tasting menu that pairs the winery's Reserve selections with creative and delicious small plates, all to highlight the fun and art of pairing food and wine. Today, Mayo Family sells all their wines themselves and happily greets 95% of the people who buy their wines. |
